An insight into the current scene of young European photography

The book establishes a series that will be published annually by Kettler in the future, presenting selected works of the members. The projects shown are a cross section of contemporary positions, which are located in the spectrum between documentary and conceptual photography, testing and crossing boundaries. Many of the works have already received international awards and, taken together, form a fascinating insight into the current scene of young European photography.

As this year was a bit different than others and our bus was parked warm and safe almost the whole year, we nearly did the complete book making process online. And somewhere in between making a lot of lists and finding ourselves in situations like trying to show each other the texture of possible printing paper via Zoom (realizing that this doesn´t work at all) this book came out.

Further 02 features work by 34 student members from around the world, exploring diverse topics such as uncertainty, hope, hardship, authenticity, and love. Additionally, the books’ intro shows pictures taken by our members during the early phases of lockdown. Over a period of 72 days we ran this project and the results give a visual glimpse of our experiences and emotions at that time. We hope you enjoy the result of roughly 52 hours of Zoom sessions, 62GB of data, 2.665 different files organized in 723 rows of online spreadsheets and hours of talk about how scary the moon might be. Further 02 was made with love, but without hugs.

Featuring works by Shirin Abedi, Katja Aßfalg, Jasper Bastian, Jan Borreck, Daniel Chatard, Florian Dürkopp, Tamara Eckhardt, Lea Franke, Chrystyna Gamerman, Andy Happel, Nils Heck, Richard Heinicke, Rafael Heygster, Nick Jaussi, Victoria Jung, Aliona Kardash, Franziska Kaufhold, Josh Kern, Felix Kleymann, Ksenia Kuleshova, Helena Lea Manhartsberger, Wilko Meiborg, Santiago Mesa, Daniel Niedermeier, Ingmar Björn Nolting, Laila Schubert, Fabian Schwarze, Jan A. This book is the third volume of a series that introduces selected works of the association’s members and offers a fascinating glimpse into the contemporary scene of young European photography. Telling stories about everyday life and the boundless excesses of our time, it features pictures that are marked by violence: directed against oneself, against others, and against the planet. Other positions include poignant snapshots that reveal personal stories of individuals, groups, or communities who are grappling with ever new challenges. The photos show freedom, hope, and love – as well as their absence. They are doing what photography does best: opening spectators’ eyes to a world that would otherwise remain hidden from them.

We present: The fourth edition of further 04 and another volume of the publication series by Fotobus Society. 34 projects offer a glimpse into the practices of our fotobus members – poetic, brutal, often complex, and always with a lot of passion for narrating, showing, and expressing.

Fotobus Society understands itself as a platform for exchange and collaboration among young enthusiasts for visual culture. This is also how to understand this book: in all the projects there is a desire to connect – either with a community, oneself, or one’s surroundings. Further 04 gives an impression of selected work of “Fotobussis”, our Fotobus members. We hope to spark discussions and conversations that go beyond these pages. Enjoy!
